The fifth month of the year is very important for our tourist destination, as historical events occurred that allow us to celebrate its founding today. Let's recall a bit of the history in the words of Professor Juan Manuel G\u00f3mez Encarnaci\u00f3n, writer and former city chronicler.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On May 2, 1888, the Las Pe\u00f1as Commandery, the former name of Puerto Vallarta, was annexed to the Municipality of San Sebasti\u00e1n by Decree No. 305 of the Honorable State Congress. Previously, it belonged to the Municipality of Talpa de Allende. The Las Pe\u00f1as Commandery had been established two years earlier, on October 31, 1886, by Decree No. 210 of the Honorable Congress of Jalisco. However, it was on May 31, 1918, that the Las Pe\u00f1as Commandery was elevated to the category of Municipality by means of Decree No. 1899, and its name was changed to Puerto Vallarta, in honor of the notable jurist Ignacio L. Vallarta.<\/p>\n

This man was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco on August 25, 1830. He had a brilliant career in politics and law; he participated in the Mexican War of Reform. Today, the bust of Ignacio L. Vallarta stands in the city's Plaza de Armas, facing the sea.<\/p>\n

A city by decree <\/strong><\/p>\n

On May 31, 1968, the town of Puerto Vallarta was elevated to the status of a city by Decree No. 8366 of the Hon. State Congress. Thus, May 31 is the most important historical date for Puerto Vallarta, as both anniversaries are celebrated on this day: as a Municipality and as a City.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday we celebrate life, the historic transition this port has undergone, and the beauty that characterizes it. Congratulations to Puerto Vallarta!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Among the most relevant celebration activities are the Solemn Session of the City Council, a protocolary act that institutionally reaffirms the festivities. Likewise, the celebration is shared with the townspeople, who eagerly await a large anniversary cake. It is a day that ends with a party, mariachi music, a band, and fireworks; in addition to the staging of various cultural and artistic events that adorn the city's most important celebration.<\/p>\n

This year Puerto Vallarta celebrates the 108th anniversary of its founding as a municipality (1918) and the 58th anniversary of its elevation to city status (1968).
