The Lighthouse Lookout began guiding ships to Puerto Vallarta, now it is a tourist attraction with history that continues to write new anecdotes.
The Lighthouse Viewpoint is also known as the Matamoros Viewpoint. The correct name of this structure is beacon, it is in charge of indicating a geographical place, in this case Puerto Vallarta. It was built by the captain of the port, Roberto Alcazar on August 15, 1932 and was fully operational until June 1978.
Although its welcome light went out and it stopped guiding boats to our coasts, after its remodeling and restoration in 2006 it began to receive hundreds of tourists. It has been a guide point for ships for more than 40 years and has currently been the ideal point for inspiration to flow in the artistic creation of paintings, photographs, writings and other works of art for 13 years.
Enjoy the road, admire the arrival
To get to this tourist point you can go up from the Pier along Mina Street, passing straight through Hidalgo until crossing Matamoros Street. There are the extreme alternatives, Galeana and Iturbide. The three routes mentioned are the most direct to reach Mirador Matamoros. Although the distance you have to walk is not that long, it can take about 15 minutes to get there, if it is recommended to be prepared.
A good bottle of water, sunscreen and a hat or sunglasses. During the walk you will be able to appreciate the Vallarta architecture. Brown roofs, houses with large windows, colorful walls, some wooden doors with beautiful details and lots of nature. Leafy trees, some fruit-bearing and others providing cool shade along the sidewalk, flower pots with ferns and flowers at the doors of the houses and vines that climb over the walls of the homes.
As you go up you get a better view of downtown Puerto Vallarta and Gringo Gulch. This area of beautiful residences has the best view to appreciate the sunsets that paint the sky of our city. From the lighthouse viewpoint you also have the opportunity to appreciate these works of nature. Remember to bring the full charge of your camera and cell phone to take spectacular photos.
You can stay on the first level, a small terrace with the great crown of the parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe. There is a small bench to rest and catch your breath. Although if you are not afraid of heights, you can climb a few more meters through the same lighthouse. The space up there is smaller, so it is recommended to be careful. The 360° view that it gives you is unmatched.

The Matamoros Viewpoint is the place for young lovers who spend their romantic afternoons watching the sunset reflected in their eyes. For the couples of yesteryear, it is a place of tranquility, where their faithful hearts beat to the rhythm of the sunset. It is a place for friends to talk about problems, to get rid of sorrows, celebrate joys and remember old anecdotes. Receive new friends, tourists, showing the best of the bay. He embraces the locals, the longing for what our city was and how it is now awakens in him.
The lighthouse viewpoint was the director of the stories that were told in the past, and is currently the observer of all the new things that are being written in the bay.
