International BlueFlag recognition

The distinctive Blue Flag or Blue Flag is a recognition granted by the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE for its acronym in English) to beaches and marinas that meet established criteria of quality, safety, education and environmental information. Once registered, an evaluation is made by the jury, headed by the Secretariats of Tourism; Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat); Communications and Transportation (SCT); Marine (SEMAR) and Health (SSA); as well as the National Water Commission (CONAGUA).

In Mexico, since 2012, the operator of this organization is Pronatura, an environmental organization whose mission is to conserve ecosystems, flora and fauna and promote the development of society in harmony with nature.

Criteria for obtaining the Blue Flag badge

There are 33 criteria for beaches and 25 for marinas, grouped into four categories:

Information and environmental education: Basic information on the characteristics of the beaches, the Blue Flag program, a code of conduct, among others.

Water quality: Information on water quality and hygiene with the latest records issued. A high standard in water quality is required. Information to avoid behaviors or practices that contaminate water such as industrial landfills or other pollutants, as well as counting in water treatment plants, taking special care with the marine ecosystem and coral reefs.

Management and Environmental Management: A Beach Management Committee must be established, have a development plan, laws and regulations; infrastructure for garbage collection, adequate and clean toilets, in addition to promoting the use of sustainable means of transport.

Security and Services: Have adequate personnel and equipment for visitor safety, signage and emergency plans, as well as access and inclusive spaces for people with disabilities.
