Birdwatching and health in Riviera Nayarit

The San Pancho Bird Observatory (OASP) developed a bird watching program as a support activity to improve the overall health and economy of people.

Watching birds is living with nature in its purest state, and nothing does the body and spirit better than listening to their song in full freedom. Conscious of this, Birding San Pancho and the San Pancho AC Bird Observatory developed the program “Birds and Health in the Bay of Banderas 2021”.

The program uses the bird watching as a support activity to improve the comprehensive health and economy of people in vulnerable sectors, during and after the Covid-19 pandemic, reported the biologist and conservationist Luis E. Morales, Owner of Birding San Pancho Ecotours and founding member of the San Pancho AC Bird Observatory

Morales added that the initiative is aimed at the inhabitants of the Banderas Bay region, either in the Riviera Nayarit (municipality of Bahía de Banderas), or in Jalisco (Cabo Corrientes and Puerto Vallarta) and who are willing to learn about birds.

 

“Our objective is for the beneficiaries to improve their quality of life by reducing anxiety and stress, carrying out a physical-cognitive and learning activation that can continue for life,” he reported.

 

The bird watching specialist said that it is a non-profit social assistance program with no affinity for any politician or religion, therefore, participation is free for beneficiary individuals and organizations, which in this case are : Volcanoes Education Project, Los Mangos Library Cultural Center, Estero El Salado and Conservation of Wonderful Species (Cembab).

 

Birdwatching in Riviera Nayarit

Regarding the subject, the general director of the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (OVC), Marc Murphy, highlighted that "Birding" or Bird Watching has become an important promotional tool for the destination, although in this occasion, the benefit goes beyond its tourist aspect, as an activity to improve the overall health and economy of the people benefited from the program.

 

Although San Pancho and San Blas are the best points for bird watching, the entire Riviera Nayarit offers excellent conditions for this activity since it is part of the western migratory route for birds traveling south from North America. The best season to watch migratory birds is from October to March, although there are guided tours all year round by specialized tour operators, such as Birding San Pancho.
