Sea Turtle nesting season begins in Puerto Vallarta

With the aim of raising awareness among citizens about the importance of protecting the sea turtle and its surroundings, municipal authorities, together with non-governmental organizations and animal protection associations, began the 2024-2025 Sea Turtle Nesting Season this Monday.

In a simple event held on El Holi beach, Tania Selenne Maya Toscano, representing the interim mayor Francisco José Martínez Gil, highlighted the importance of this annual event where sea turtles lay their eggs on the beaches of the port, providing a unique natural spectacle.

The director of Urban Development and Environment, Adriana Guzmán Jiménez, recalled that the municipality's Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation program carries out protection, conservation, monitoring and surveillance actions on various beaches. This program travels 25 kilometers in search of nests to recover and protect them in incubation pens. Once the incubation process is complete, the hatchlings are released with the participation of the community, educational institutions, tourists and private organizations.

“We hope to surpass last year's results and reaffirm our commitment to the protection of the environment and natural resources of Puerto Vallarta,” emphasized Guzmán Jiménez.

Puerto Vallarta has one of the most successful sea turtle protection programs in the country, allowing participation in the release of hatchlings between the months of July and December.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Brenda Janeth Díaz Flores, director of the Vallarta Institute of Culture (IVC); Sergio García Angarica, head of the Subdirectorate of Environment; Carlos Alberto Morales Nolasco, representing the Directorate of Tourism and Economic Development; Rohini Suta Velazco, director of CEMBAB; the biologist Odín Benitez Luna, in charge of the Boca de Tomates Tortuguero Camp, and Mario Ramírez Ramírez, head of Civil Protection and Firefighters Lifeguards.
