The twelfth month of the year is signified in local history, when this paradise of the peaceful ranch “Las Peñas” was given a name for the first time. Years later the Ejido de Puerto Vallarta was born.

December 12, 1851 is the officially recognized date of the founding of the Las Peñas ranch, the first name of Puerto Vallarta, by Don Guadalupe Sánchez, family and a group of friends. On December 16, 1869, the deputies of Jalisco asked the Government of the Republic to authorize the port of Las Peñas for high-altitude and cabotage trade.

Ignacio L Vallarta, notable from Jalisco

Ignacio Luis Vallarta Ogazón was born on August 25, 1830 in the city of Guadalajara. He was Governor of Jalisco, Secretary of the Interior, Secretary of Foreign Relations, president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation and candidate for the presidency of the Republic in 1880. His last name gave its name in 1918 to the well-known tourist center of Puerto Vallarta, which until then it was called Las Peñas. On December 31, 1893, the lawyer Ignacio Luis Vallarta died in the capital of the Republic, after whose memory our municipality was named in 1918.

On December 31, 1902, the Federal Government inaugurated the Cabo Corrientes lighthouse, for many years the most powerful on the Mexican coast and which came to facilitate navigation in this region of the Mexican Pacific.

On December 5, 1929, the first endowment of land was made to the Commonwealth of Puerto Vallarta, as a result of the affectation of the La Unión mining company in Cuale. On December 3, 1931, the first aircraft arrived at this port, piloted by Mr. Charles Baugham, who was nicknamed “Pancho Pistolas” here, due to his fondness for being armed.

On December 12, 1951, with great festivities, the First Centenary of the Las Peñas Foundation was celebrated.

In December 1965, the concrete crown was placed on the tower of the temple of Our Lady of Guadalupe, designed by the sculptor Esteban Ramírez Guareño.

It is fair to remember that on December 4, 2005, Professor Carlos Munguía Fregoso, a famous man from Puerto Vallarta, author of important volumes that represent the backbone of regional history, passed away.

Among the relevant activities in Puerto Vallarta during December, the festivities to Our Lady of Guadalupe stand out, which begin on the 1st, to culminate on the 12th.
